At a first glance, this chair appears to disobey the laws of Physics. The Magic Chair comes from designer Davide Conti and seems to only stand on one foot. This optical illusion is made possible due to a transparent material which is used …to help maintain the balance of the chair. But since this material is almost invisible, when looking at this product from a certain angle, the user will surprisingly only see a bunch of straight thin lines. Despite its fragile appearance, this chair is very durable and strong.

To a child, the fact that the drawers are suspended “mid-air” is magic. To you, the fact that the drawers are actually functional and can hold things is mess- and sanity-saving magic.

One…only one piece of material is used to carve out such a unique table. Called the One – piece table, it’s best described as an attractive, practical and optical illusion furniture for any space. The main curve changes all the time, depending on from where you view it.

Float is a table made of 64 cubes strung together with wire, but mostly held in place by magnetic force. The cubes appear as though they are levitating. It was bouncy, too.

Letter Bench is a creative new project out of Cornwall, UK—a statement in outdoor seating that’s meant to put potential patients at ease. The postcard-inspired wooden bench comes with its very own postage stamp in the proper corner, creased into a bend that replicates a folded piece of mail. Constructed of hardwood, Letter Bench is supported on a stainless steel frame, even though the piece creates somewhat of an optical illusion: from the front, it looks like the bench is held up by nothing but air.

17. Deformscape – Optical Illusion Yard [link]

“Deformscape” is in fact an interesting outdoor pattern that was created in order to bring something fresh to a house in San Francisco. To generate the resultant pattern, a 3-dimensional bulge is formed around the tree, and its distorted wire-grid projected onto a 2-dimensional surface. Taking into account appearance effects created by perspective views from inside, the resultant planar surface appears sink around the tree.

The toilet paper roll sculptures were inspired by the artists’ everyday observations. She cut small paper shapes that she places inside the toilet paper rolls with tweezers. Using paper that is the same color as the roll gives the illusion that the paper figures are part of the toilet paper roll. They have a whimsical quality, capturing moments in time that may otherwise be overlooked or seen as mundane in a busy world.

Graphic design firm Dowling Duncan created a remarkable entry for the Dollar ReDe$ign Project. The series of notes are intended to be both educational and easy to use. Each note uses a black and white image depicting a particular aspect of American history and culture. They are then overprinted with informational graphics or a pattern relating to that particular image.

$1 – The first African American president

$5 – The five biggest native American tribes

$10 – The bill of rights, the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution

$20 – 20th Century America

$50 – The 50 States of America

$100 – The first 100 days of President Franklin Roosevelt.

That is the most colorful money design I’ve ever seen. According to the company, the reason for that is they think it’s a strong way to distinguish one note from another.

I just wonder how much it will cost to make a note like that?

Outdoor posters were turned into large interactive push puzzles that consumers could solve in order to “sort your head”. This was done to promote McDonald’s Large Coffee for only 1 Euro.

McDonalds: Free Coffee Pole, Bus shelter [link]

As part of a national campaign promoting McDonald’s restaurants, a downtown Vancouver lamppost became part of an out-of-home (OOH) optical illusion, appearing to pour coffee into a giant cup on the sidewalk. At the time, McDonald’s was giving away free small cups of its brew for a two-week period, in an effort to attract new breakfast customers.

Ad firm Cossette’s Vancouver office developed the concept for a lamppost near 6th Avenue and Cambie Street. The post was wrapped in brown vinyl to resemble poured coffee, while an oversized carafe was attached to the end. Elsewhere in the city, a transit shelter was turned into an ‘hourglass,’ with an ever-diminishing number of coffee beans reminding customers of the promotion’s short-term nature.

This one is really brilliant.

As every restaurants have their closing hours. We feel that this is a great opportunity for McDonald’s to communicate the new 24 hours service. McDonald’s places a night image of its restaurant onto the pull-down shutter of various restaurants. Once the shutter is pulled down after the restaurant’s operating hours, passer-by will see an image of a McDonald’s in late hours. This is to deliver the message that while other restaurants are closed, one can enjoy good meal at McDonald’s 24 hours a day.

I would have never known it was a coffee bean without the title, it looked more like an old crusty burger to me. I think this is really smart. Very clever indeed. But the first thing in my head is “Ew! Gross burger!…. oh, coffee. cute.”

McDonald’s newspaper: Fries and Burger [link]

The idea here was to keep McDonald’s front and center, in a multi-tasking world. The articles are real. Just color was added. By fitting into the target’s activity (reading the news), rather than interrupting it, the “on-the-go” brand benefit was demonstrated.

1. The Great Mushrooming Lights [link]

What looks like a mythical treasure one would stumble upon in a storybook tale, is in fact a beautiful eco-friendly combination of reclaimed wood and LED lights. Great Mushrooming is taking inspiration from the world’s best designer, Mother Nature, to create these luminous mushrooms whose only magic lies in their ability to charm.

2. RING-GE-ROO LIGHT by OWA Innovation Design Group [link]

The Ring-ge-roo Light shuttles between innovative, unique and kitsch! It definitely takes the sting out of a hospital drip, which is loathsome yet essential. The water in the PVC bag softens the LED beam of light inside to create a subdued ambient light source. The color of the light can be changed by changing the color of the water inside the bag. I wouldn’t mind hanging this off my arm; just to get some special effects I’d use colored water, as recommended by the designer.

Somehow, this looks a bit creepy for me… maybe just me.

3. Live Lamp [link]

LIVE LAMP is a glowing nest of eighty live Fuschii v Gracillis tillandsia air plants mounted to a blown glass orb. Illuminated internally by a CFL grow lamp, these epiphytic plants survive with no dirt – just UV, air and a little moisture. Remove the dome and run the plants under water or mist liberally once a week.

4. FIAT LUX [link]

FIAT LUX is a lamp whose switch levitates when the light is on. When the light is off, the switch is an autonomous sphere that can be stocked onto the lamp thanks to a magnet system. The user becomes an illusionist by turning the lamp on, just by approaching the switch.

5. A can of Light? [link]

Tin Can; best used for beans, worms, fruits…but apt for light? Yes! If you make it as simplistic as the Tin Can Lights! A sealed surprise just like your can-o-pickles! Peel open the lid to welcome a soft glowing lamp that creates a pleasant ambiance. Strum it as a night lamp or show it off as an eccentric collectible in the living room.

6. Light PEG [link]

The main idea of the lamp is to combine functions of pegs with light, because usually when you buy a lamp it suits one part of your interior, this lamp was created for having light wherever you want to illuminate something. Independent pegs with 6 LED-lams inside each and two rechargeable batteries can be attached to any of the surfaces and can be charged from the wireless charger in a shape of a tree. There are a lot of situations you can use this lamp some of them you can design by yourself.

7. Glowing Pillow – d°light Huggable [link]

The d°light Huggable takes home furnishings to a new level as an innovative combination of ambient lighting and comforting pillow. The soft fuzziness of the wispy, mohair-like cover conceals 12 LEDs that do the glowing. The d°light Huggable can glow brightly for around 4 hours on four AA batteries, after which it dims gradually

8. Shadow Clock Light [link]

This is one is a lamp and only be a clock when it is turned on in dim room.

Designed by Hanhsi Chen and Chiyu Chen, the Shadow Clock concept is some kind of modern sundial. The clock features a conventional halogen bulb and a quartz clock movement mechanism. It is capable of using the shadow created by its built-in halogen lamp to project a giant clock on your wall. From the light comes three different shadows: one each for hour, minute, and second hands of the clock. (I bet I can’t never figure out the time)

9. Moonwalk – Cool Lamp [link]

Moonwalk is the name of this fun and cool lamp made by Thomas De Lussac, a French designer of furniture, light fittings and sofas. The lamp is described as a “playful wink in the universe of the creator”. It’s made of lacquered aluminum and available in several colors and adjustable positions.

10. Oxo Candela Luau [link]

Lizzy, this is the big one. Luau turns bright tabletop lighting into a robust, portable, tactile product that is equally useful indoors and out. The Luau can be lit while on the charger, and lights up automatically when lifted from the base. It can be dimmed or turned off to conserve the charge until you need it. Luau’s discreet charging pod has an integral, bi-color charge status indicator. Great for nighttime strolls, outdoor dining, or even bed-side.

11. Tooli Rechargeable Lights [link]
