Motoi Yamamoto is a Japanese artist that uses salt as the main material to create his artworks. In Asia, salt is a symbol of purification; for example, in Japan small plates with salt are usually placed at the entrance of restaurants to protect them against evil spirits. Motoi Yamamoto, the master of salt, created some super complicated but pretty artwork using only salt, which we present in this post. It is impressive how much patience, dedication and attention to detail he possesses.

Reasons for using salt

Salt seems to possess a close relation with human life beyond time and space. Moreover, especially in Japan, it is indispensable in the death culture. Motoi then came to choose salt as a material after his sister’s death.

Many of Motoi Yamamoto’s works take the form of labyrinths with complicated patterns, ruined and abandoned staircases or too narrow life-size tunnels, and all these works are made with salt. A common perception towards them is “nearly reachable, yet not quite” or “nearly conceivable, yet not quite”.

In today’s post, we have 10 Invention and Concept Designs, you might find they are creative and useful; or crazy and unacceptable. They might not really new designs, but for me, it is first time to see them and find they are kindly of interesting. Now, let’s check the post and let us know your thoughts.

STIHL Leaf Blowers “Autumn Calendar 2010″ [link]

This super cool calendar is developed to promote the product of leaf blowers by STIHL. So bad I didn’t find it when I make the “10 unusual calendar designs“;

As I know, it is the first tear-off calendar, that tears off its leaves automatically! To show the necessity of STIHL leaf blowers in an entertaining way – day by day. Due the fact that leaves fall in autumn, their calendar covers the time period 09/23 – 12/21.

Multiple-Layered sofa [link]

This interesting sofa is designed by Barber Osgerby. Basically, it has a solid oak frame and multi-layered fabric upholstery, which allows you easliy to change color.

EZ Cracker egg cracker and separator [link]

This is an interesting invention and I really don’t we need a tool to crack egg???

As description, it is said, EZ Cracker egg cracker and separator is the perfect way to cook with eggs at just the touch of a button. The simple design allows you to crack open eggs without any mess or bits of shell in your food. Special included FREE BONUS attachment makes separating egg yolks and whites just as easy. Strip shells from hard boiled eggs in seconds!

Aspiral Clock [link]

This super cool clock called Aspiral is handmade by inventors Will Aspinall and Neil Lambth in London.

How does it work? The spiral face you below turns slowly over twelve hours. The red ball rests on the spiral ledge; as the spiral turns it travels along the ledge to the middle. At the 12th hour it drops through the hole in the middle to begin its journey again at the bottom. There are lots of things can be customized, like the clock face color/pattern time markings…

Current time on the clock, 4:45

Bubble Shaped Skyscraper is a Fresh Water Factory [link]

Design Crew for Architecture have created an incredible water purifying skyscraper that looks like dozens of soapy bubbles stacked one on top of another. Capable of making freshwater efficiently and sustainably using a series of bubbles filled with water-filtering mangroves, the unconventional building pushes the envelope of what a skyscraper is capable of doing.

Using tidal powered pumps, the brackish water ((water that has more salinity than fresh water, but not as much as seawater) will be brought up into the tower and circulate through the mangrove plants, which have the unique ability to thrive on brackish water and perspire freshwater. The freshwater sweat then evaporates and condensates into dew on wall of the greenhouse and is collected in a freshwater tank. The resulting freshwater can then be distributed to the fields using gravitational flow.

Play ground play table [link]

Korean studio nothing design group has designed ‘play ground play table’ which allows users to grow plants in it. made of wood, the table is divided into different sized square sections to accommodate various types of plants. users also can raise fish or use it for ordinary storage.

This a a pretty odd design…My question is: How to water those plant? since the table is made of wood..is watering will cause problem? damage the table itself?

Glow in the Dark Loo Roll [link]

Definitely fun product. I would like to try…em, one day.

In a world where scientific discovery and exploration is slowly but surely unraveling the myriad mysteries of the universe, it’s gratifying to know that some idiot can still find time to come up with such a ludicrous invention as Glow In The Dark Loo Roll. It won’t enlighten us as to what happened at the beginning of time, it will shed some light on the subject at hand, and it’s a lot funnier. Like all things luminous it needs light to charge itself up, so to speak, and the amount of light it gets will determine how long it glows for.

Wind up socket [link]

Wind Up Socket has a timer to it, once you set the duration and time’s up, the electricity supply to that socket gets cut off. For grownups who don’t have many restrictions and can self regulate, this one may seem more cumbersome than anything else. But for moms with teens who don’t comprehend “half hour of TV / Videogames time”; this is booty!

Rodarte Fall 2010: Glowy Shoes! [link]

I guess this pretty shoes will be loved by lots of ladies…

It looks really so amazing, pretty and snob-worthy. Yes, I am talking about the Glow Shoes that Rodarte showcased at the NY Fashion Week. Completely futuristic and attractive, the footwear will up surge your style quotient.

The “Etirement” lamp – lamp with dimmer [link]

Based on an orgaic skin-and-bones body, the Etirement has both: a skin and a skeleton. Pulling the rod you see in the center there adjusts the light the lamp gives off. The intensity of the light lowers down and rises up according to the distortion of the fabric membrane.

The designer of this object, Rémi Bouhaniche, calls the temporary, changing shape of the Etirement “a poetic time from a daily action.” Very pretty!

The Formula 1 for this year is to begin this Saturday…As a loyal F1 fan, I made this post of 10 creative Formula 1 Car Replica/Recreation. You can see some impressive recreation of Formula 1 Car, for example, the one made by 956,000 Matchsticks, 22 types of bread or 4,405lbs chocolate. The Styrofoam looks with great details and the ice sculpture is also pretty “cool” (in both way.) However, my favorite one is Lego Car(sorry, I can’t control my fond of Lego…).

1. Styrofoam F1 Car form Michael Salter [link]

A full scale replica of a Formula One race car made from scrap Styrofoam pieces.

2. Life-Size Bread F1 Car [link]

This edible racing car was baked by Culinary Executive Chef from the Royal Plaza On Scotts in Singapore with his team consisting of six chefs, two artists, two technicians, two culinary staff members and five young volunteers from Metta Welfare Association.

According to Klik.tv, there are a thousand individual loaves and 22 different types of bread in the life-size F1 car. Let’s check the ingredients: 33 Lbs yeast, 4.7 gallons water, 2.2 Lbs salt, squid ink, soy beans etc; then bake 1,000 loaves and 22 varieties of bread. Assemble and coat with 3 gallons of food varnish.

3. F1 Made Out of Puma Clothing [link]

This cool life-size Ferrari Formula 1 car was build by PUMA retail team out of nothing more than Ferrari branded clothing, caps, shoes and bags.

4. Full-Sized F1 Car Using 956,000 Matchsticks [link]

Michael Arndt decided that buying a real Formula 1 car was too expensive, so he spent 6-years building a Mercedes-McLaren replica using 956,000 matchsticks. Look really impressive.

5. Formula 1 Car made from Shoe Boxes [link]

Based in UK, the Wilson brothers have created a formula 1 car using puma shoe boxes. It was part of an installation in the new store at north state street, Chicago and references the ongoing relationship puma has with motor sports.

6. Ice sculpture F1 car [link]

Made the formula 1 car of Alonzo in ice, actual size. All pieced together like you would in reality.

A life-size chocolate model of a Ferrari Formula 1 car has been unveiled in Italy. Confectioners spent more than a year making the car out of 4,405lbs of Belgian chocolate. The £12,000 chocolate Ferrari is based on an F2008, and has a red, edible coating.

7. LEGO Ferrari Formula 1 Car [link]

This drivable Ferrari Formula 1 car was made from 80,000 LEGO bricks for the annual LEGO World event in the Netherlands.

The grounds of the Williams F1 headquarters in Oxford shire feature this hedge which has been trimmed into the shape of a Formula 1 car.

Sebastian Vettel of Germany and Red Bull Racing is seen with sand sculpture of a Red Bull Racing car on St Kilda beach during previews to the Australian Formula One Grand Prix on March 26, 2009 in Melbourne, Australia.

Not sure are you a chess lover… but my father is . Even though he doesn’t play that well but he does like to collect various chess sets.He has lots of collection, from the normal wooden one to the stone, glass, steel and even jade…When I am looking for some present for his birthday, I came cross some interesting chess set. They either have some special material or use some special characters to represent pieces. The first four designs are from an exhibition for 49th edition of Milan furniture fair. Those artists infused their own interpretation of the board game in real dimensions.

‘modern chess set’, rachel whiteread 2005

You can click the this link to see more chess set design for the exhibition and following are some interesting chess set designs I found online.

Knitted chess set from CozyColeman (Link)

This unique crocheted chess set was created for the Woodstock fair. It won first place prize as well as a Superintendent’s award.

Wooden, Woolen and Whimsical Chess Set (Link)

Pieces: wooden spools and doll pins wrapped in gold and plum wool, adorned with brass charms and other miniature delicates.

Board: hand painted metallic and cream squares atop a hinged wooden box.

Paper Mache Chess Set (Link)

This one is a bit weird to me…

This eccentric, eco-friendly chess set is made from salvaged materials like paper, cardboard and bottle caps. Hand made and hand painted.

3d Chess Set (Link)

This is a unique chessboard which comes with 3D terrain. Thanks to this different design, it will make you have a better chess experience, just like in the real battlefield, maybe.

Good and Evil Chess Set (Link)

Designed by artist Mauricio Cattelan, with hand painted porcelain figures representing people he admires and despises like “White King” Adolph Hitler and “Black King” Martin Luther King, surrounded by characters like Rasputin, Donatella Versace and Gandhi.

Wobble Chess set from Adin Mumma (Link)

Give your chess game a shiver of sophistication with this modern chess board that makes the game come to life. Designed by Adin Mumma, a concave landscape stabilizes freely quivering chess pieces, creating a lively interaction between board and pieces. Made in China with cherry and maple wood.

Samurai Chess Set (Link)

One of the most unique chess boards you will ever see!

Hand-made from solid hardwoods, the board measures 42″ wide by 30″ across. There are 7″ by 27″ sand gardens on either side of the playing surface. The sand gardens contain rocks, a walking bridge, and three LIVE Bonsai trees. The pieces are hand-carved…the Samurai king stands about 7″ tall, the gate pawns about 3″ tall. Other pieces include the Japanese Princess for queen, the cane carrying elder advisor for bishops, Samurai Headdress for knights and Pagodas for the rooks. The board has the Kenji for the Samurai in the middle of the board.

Edible Chess Set (Link)

An entirely edible chess set, the pieces are solid chocolate, the board is an icebox cookie held up by chocolate cake.

Catholics and Jews Chess Set (Link)

Made in flame-worked glass by Gianni Toso, who was raised Catholic but converted to Judaism; it’s at the Corning (NY) Glass Museum.

It is said, this really is a chess set where one side is Catholic and the other side is Jewish. It is made completely of glass, and is part of the permanent exhibit at the Corning Museum of Glass.

By looking at those drawings…It is still hard for me to believe 0.5 mm technical pencil and A2 paper are the only attributes of these masterpieces. Any way, let’s enjoy!

Spring is almost at hand. Are you ready to green your home? Thought you might want to update your plant pot, we prepared today’s post – 17 Creative and Innovative Plant Pot Designs which will help to stylize your indoor/outdoor gardening as well as keep your plant alive and healthy. Basing on their features, we categorized them into four group: Pot with Multifunction; Pot help you communicate with your plant; Pot help water your plant and Pot with Unique Shape.

Multifunction Use of Plant Pot

One Pot, Two Lives [link]

This is a planter and a fishtank. You put your regularly potted plant in this pot on top, and a goldfish on the bottom. What could they provide for eachother, you might ask? Waste! Yes, the fishes turn their eaten bait remnants into nutrients for the plant, while the water fed to the plant is filtered as it passes though and becomes clean for the fish. It is a totally natural and lovely system.

O2 air purifier [link]

Place your potted plant on the O2 and water as usual. Excess water is evaporated and the system accelerates the process of photosynthesis, not to mention keeps tabs on our green friends so you’ll always know when they need water.

Grass Patch That Tells The Time [link]

Timeless Garden tries to bring in a green patch and clock to match your décor. Using the chemistry between mud and metal, the clock sustains itself, without craving additional toxic juices. The frame is a hitch between by two recycled plastic bodies fashioned as a pot/clock.

hmmm…I’m just wondering what will be the outcome if I happen to over-water the plant.

Umbrella Holder & Plant Pot in One [link]

The umbrella pot made of ceramic has a small plant pot at the bottom to use the rain water. This umbrella pot allows rainwater from your umbrella to drain into the plant pot. Low-maintenance way to keep a small plant. Rainwater drains into the plant pot via internal holes.

Dish Drainer – drips into plant pot below to water it! [link]

Ok. This one is even werid than the umbrella above. Put my clean dish on the plant…I’m still concerned it will end up dirtying my dishes and make me wash it again.

Budak is a dish drainer that enables a small plant to be watered by the water that drains off the dishes. Product can hold dishes and utensils up to 2 users. With the help of the branches around the pot, dish drainer grabs the dishes.

Plant Astray [link]

If you or your friends are smokers, then you know how difficult it can be to incorporate an ashtray into your decor, let alone deal with the smell. Tab A (vase) and Tab B (planter) are clever little solutions to this problem, hiding an ashtray beneath either a vase or a planter. A perfect way to conceal a dirty habit both visually and aromatically.

Just wonder does that will hurt the plant?

Biosfera Lamp Pot [link]

Creative table lamp design that doubles as a plant pot. It is one unlike any other I’ve seen. I hope it doesn’t get too hot or your plants might easily die or even catch fire!

Communicate with your plant

MonPot – Thirsty Plants Demand Attention [link]

The thing with MonPot is that it’s a potholder with an inbuilt rotating timer and is inspired by the sorts you see on an oven. There are plants like cactus, buddleia, California poppy, red-hot poker and many herbs that don’t need watering every single day. So if you are the forgetful sorts use this alarm and do the job timely. Just rotate the base to a setting of your choice, like a day or a week and a reminder light will go off at the end of the duration.

Those looking for tech-details, there is Bioplastics, solar cells, rotating base and LED involved here.

Breathing Plants Demand Attention [link]

The breathing pot helps us find an analogous emotive connection with our plants. The pot expands and contracts simulating breathing. If the breathing stops, you better give that plant some water and place it in sunlight.

Hehe… that is a funny concept…

Pet Plant – Plants Tell You What They Want [link]

Em, this one is a bit wricky for me… See the expression of the plant? Dissastifying? Danger?

The very sleek looking pot measures soil conditions, temperature, humidity, and water – calculates those variables based on the need of said plant, and expresses its condition via a series of pictograms on an LCD display.

It’s also smart enough to know if you’ve over watered and will systematically drain itself into a water vessel. All this high tech goodness does mean it needs power but a simple USB interface does double duty by charging and transmitting pertinent information to and from computer software.

Watering Concern Plant Pot

EggPot [link]

It’s all about humidification. Humidity? Yes. The way the egg sits in the pot there, it collects. Collects the sweat of the world through the natural processes of Mother Nature. And you don’t even have to work out to make it get fed! Come with me, fellow designers, and crack this egg on your mind grapes so we can make jelly.

“Grobal” plant pot [link]

With its unique watering system, designer Karim Rashid’s “Grobal” plant pot keeps your house plants lush, green, and looking sharp. Grobal draws water and nutrients from the reservoir into the Grobal Soil”; in the top chamber. Just check the water level through the water level indicator and refill when needed through the “Nutriport.”

Roly-Poly Pot – Plants Fall Over When Thirsty [link]

Just like people, plants fall over when they begin to die from thirst but unlike people, plants can’t verbally communicate when they need watering. That’s where the Roly-Poly Pot comes in. Using water a a counterweight, the pot slowly tips over when water levels are low. The cool thing is each pot can be adjusted to work with any plant’s watering needs. Neat idea but still a concept for now.

The IV Plant Pot(GBP 160, about $320) self-watering plant pot’s main feature is a medical drip feed. This unique characteristic allows the plant to be nourished with water and food as it is required.

Unique shape – Smart Design

A Fusion of Flower Framework [link]

It is the most basic brilliance, the most simplistic, smart design – two of hearts, two hearts that beat as one! In this case, two bits of pottery, made one. Instead of there being a pot with a hole or holes below it being held by a saucer that would hold water, it’s both of those things in one piece! Take a peek and drip a little dribble.

A large amount of water can be held by this new pot cuff, water that can then be absorbed at any rate the plant chooses through its roots. That’s how nature works! Very nice.

Easy re-potting pot design [link]

Re-flowerpot looks at doing away with the heartbreak of losing a sapling due to its incorrect transfer. The pot simply breaks-up into two parts, kinda like a mold for your soil and plant.

Steckling Plug N Plant [link]

If you live in an apartment and would like to fill your balcony with some green delight, do consider this Stecklig Plug N Plant. Like those english saddles, this pot stick on top of the bannister and has 2 separate plant areas for those who like to mix and match their plants Steckling is the first flower pot for balcony railing. No tools or screws are needed. What a brilliant idea eh? You can forget about using those boring green plastic box or metal hooks.
