Now here’s something you don’t see every day – Optical Illusion Home Design! Sure you probably have seen illusion bottle holders or floating magazine holder. But today we will talk something bigger, like your furniture, your wall paint, your carpet and your yard. I am not sure is that actually user-friendly, but it is definitely eye-catching. You can easily impress or confuse your guest. lol

1. Magic Chair with Invisible Feet from Davide Conti [link]

At a first glance, this chair appears to disobey the laws of Physics. The Magic Chair comes from designer Davide Conti and seems to only stand on one foot. This optical illusion is made possible due to a transparent material which is used …to help maintain the balance of the chair. But since this material is almost invisible, when looking at this product from a certain angle, the user will surprisingly only see a bunch of straight thin lines. Despite its fragile appearance, this chair is very durable and strong.

2. Suspended Marionette [link]

This one not only looks like floating… but also break into piece…

3. Sancal Elipse floating coffee table [link]

The Sancal Elipse coffee table looks like it’s floating. We think the design is outstanding except for those hands. What was Rafa Garcia thinking?

4. Cracked Cabinet [link]

The cracked cabinet looks amazing and the striking design more than makes up for the price tag. If you have an Alice in Wonderland fan in your life, this would make a great gift.

http://www.straightlinedesigns.com/cracked.html

5. Essey Illusion Ice/White Side Table [amazon]

An eye catching and strong small table made from pyramid-texture acrylic. It is designed to recreate the look of a tablecloth floating in the air and is produced in 3mm textured acrylic. Each table is truly unique and handmade in Denmark.

6. Boom! Cabinet [link]

As if your child’s room were right out of the pages of Alice’s whimsical Wonderland, the Boom Cabinet looks like it exploded, then stopped in time. To a child, the fact that the drawers are suspended “mid-air” is magic. To you, the fact that the drawers are actually functional and can hold things is mess- and sanity-saving magic.

7. Optical Illusion Curtains Photos [link]

This design tricks the eye into believing your room is larger than it actually is using the technique of continuing the room onto the fabric of the curtain. Simply print a photograph of your living room onto material, hang as a curtain, and voila, you have a room double the size of your existing one! Strange, but ingenious.

8. Fade Out Chair [link]

Isn’t this chair amazing? Made by Japanese design company, Nendo, this acrylic chair is painted with a wood grain, with legs fade from walnut to invisible. As a result, the chair appears to be floating.

9. Floating cloud Sofa design concept [link]

Designed for ultra comfort and relaxation, the Cloud magnetically levitating sofa is the most amazing sofa concept I’ve ever come across. The magnetic force generated by the base offers support for the verrry soft upper part of the sofa. It would be a great thing to work, relax or powernap on.

10. One – piece table [link]

One…only one piece of material is used to carve out such a unique table. Called the One – piece table, it’s best described as an attractive, practical and optical illusion furniture for any space. The main curve changes all the time, depending on from where you view it.

11. Melting Cabinet [link]

Ok. this cabinet is melting… is it too hot in the room? Wait a second, those melting part is a drawer??

12. Float by RockPaperRobot [link]

Float is a table made of 64 cubes strung together with wire, but mostly held in place by magnetic force. The cubes appear as though they are levitating. It was bouncy, too.

13. Bad Table [link]

Pardon the mess, but this table just went on the carpet. Thankfully, the carpet is included, but the table leg will never come down. And, um, watch your step.

14. Letter Bench by the U.K.’s Boex Brothers [link]

Letter Bench is a creative new project out of Cornwall, UK—a statement in outdoor seating that’s meant to put potential patients at ease. The postcard-inspired wooden bench comes with its very own postage stamp in the proper corner, creased into a bend that replicates a folded piece of mail. Constructed of hardwood, Letter Bench is supported on a stainless steel frame, even though the piece creates somewhat of an optical illusion: from the front, it looks like the bench is held up by nothing but air.

15. 3D Stairs Rug [link]

Play with optical illusion. Inspired by the entrance stairs, this piece is intent to be placed in front of doors.

16. Cube Switch plates [link]

The Cube Switch plates from The Curiosity Shoppe is a new funny idea than can Cube Switch-plates turn your wall into an optical illusion. This idea would make your home a very cool place, and I’m pretty sure that all your visitors will ask you about these switch-plates. Simply swap them out with your current, boring hardware and you’ll have the coolest outlet or light-switch in town.

17. Deformscape – Optical Illusion Yard [link]

“Deformscape” is in fact an interesting outdoor pattern that was created in order to bring something fresh to a house in San Francisco. To generate the resultant pattern, a 3-dimensional bulge is formed around the tree, and its distorted wire-grid projected onto a 2-dimensional surface. Taking into account appearance effects created by perspective views from inside, the resultant planar surface appears sink around the tree.

18. Optical Illusion Wall Paint [link]

For this design if the visitors who are not standing in the right corner will not have a clue about the concept. Lines & curves are painted on the wall.

We have featured several posts about “<a href="http://www.designswan.com/archives/tag/recycled-art" target="_blank"">Recycled Art” before and today, we will introduce you another creative artist who transforms everyday objects found in flea-markets and car boot sales into works of art. Working with a variety of refuse materials such as rusted kitchen pans, typewriter keys, car lights and other scrap metals, Edouard Martinet sculpts several types of animals and insects.

He fits each component into place as if putting together a puzzle of random pieces and parts. Each masterpiece is carefully assembled after having drafted several detailed sketches. This process requires a sufficient amount of time to get from the idea to the completion.

Sharks cause an irrational fear in many people and are often viewed as mindless animals bent on destruction. However, the truth of the shark is that unprovoked shark attacks are actually quite rare. Moreover, it can represent experience to be reckoned with, fearless and ambition. In this post, we will have 20 Creative Shark Inspired Product Designs, from clothing to shoes, from peg to backpack, from soup bowl to tea infuser. It is really cool to see so many shark inspired products. Let shark rule!

1. Sharky Tea Infuser, make a killer cuppa tea [link]

The Sharky Tea Infuser, designed in Argentina by Pablo Matteoda has a clever design that is both fun and useful. The floating tea infuser extracts tea leaves, herbs or fruit in water until completely saturated. During the waiting process, you can see the color of your tea create a beautiful effect which reminded us of the movie scenes where the ocean turned blood red. Very amusing in deed.

Mom and Dad are going fall for this terry-ific sea-inspired robe–hook, line and little stinker.
Here is an amazing vehicle – a shark shaped submarine that performs feats like a shark. Its creator Rob Innes, however, doesn’t consider it a submarine but a cross between a plane and a boat.

Not only is this, but Seabreacher X has many close resemblances to a white shark. It includes a dorsal fin, gaping jaws, rows of dagger-sharp teeth and measures 16.5ft in length which is almost identical to sharks’. Powered by a 260hp engine that enables the shark shaped boat to run 50mph above and 20mph below water is for the rich adrenaline-junkies and costs about £60,000 per unit.

With a quirky canvas and steady hand, she created these fantastic scenes inside empty toilet paper rolls.

The toilet paper roll sculptures were inspired by the artists’ everyday observations. She cut small paper shapes that she places inside the toilet paper rolls with tweezers. Using paper that is the same color as the roll gives the illusion that the paper figures are part of the toilet paper roll. They have a whimsical quality, capturing moments in time that may otherwise be overlooked or seen as mundane in a busy world.

Below we will showcase 24 transparent screen trick photos. The environments presented in these photos appear to have a completely transparent screen which creates an optical illusion. Have fun!

Graphic design firm Dowling Duncan created a remarkable entry for the Dollar ReDe$ign Project. The series of notes are intended to be both educational and easy to use. Each note uses a black and white image depicting a particular aspect of American history and culture. They are then overprinted with informational graphics or a pattern relating to that particular image.

That is the most colorful money design I’ve ever seen. According to the company, the reason for that is they think it’s a strong way to distinguish one note from another.

I just wonder how much it will cost to make a note like that?

I am not a big fan of McDonald’s, but I have to admit most awesome fast food advertisement I have seen in my life are from McDonald’s. In this post, I will showcase 20 Creative and Smart McDonald’s Advertisement Designs collected from the world. And I am going to find something to eat since I am so hungry after making this post. lol

McDonald’s Large Coffee: Outdoor puzzle [link]

Outdoor posters were turned into large interactive push puzzles that consumers could solve in order to “sort your head”. This was done to promote McDonald’s Large Coffee for only 1 Euro.

McDonald’s Crosswalk [link]

Pedestrian crosswalk was decorated to look like McDonald’s fries.

McDonalds: Free Coffee Pole, Bus shelter [link]

As part of a national campaign promoting McDonald’s restaurants, a downtown Vancouver lamppost became part of an out-of-home (OOH) optical illusion, appearing to pour coffee into a giant cup on the sidewalk. At the time, McDonald’s was giving away free small cups of its brew for a two-week period, in an effort to attract new breakfast customers.

Ad firm Cossette’s Vancouver office developed the concept for a lamppost near 6th Avenue and Cambie Street. The post was wrapped in brown vinyl to resemble poured coffee, while an oversized carafe was attached to the end. Elsewhere in the city, a transit shelter was turned into an ‘hourglass,’ with an ever-diminishing number of coffee beans reminding customers of the promotion’s short-term nature.

McDonalds Freshness Box Salad [link]

This poster, with what appears to be fresh salad vegetables and condensation, changes a bus shelter into a section in the refrigerator. The poster was placed in Wiener Platz, a place known for its food markets, in Haidhausen, a district of Munich.

McDonald’s: Wi-Fries [link]

“Love free wi-fi.”

McDonald’s: Baby Ronald [link]

Just opened, near Kimaya Kothrud. I’m lovin’ it.

Honestly, I am a bit scary looking at it.

McDonald’s Ambient Media [link]

This one is really brilliant.

As every restaurants have their closing hours. We feel that this is a great opportunity for McDonald’s to communicate the new 24 hours service. McDonald’s places a night image of its restaurant onto the pull-down shutter of various restaurants. Once the shutter is pulled down after the restaurant’s operating hours, passer-by will see an image of a McDonald’s in late hours. This is to deliver the message that while other restaurants are closed, one can enjoy good meal at McDonald’s 24 hours a day.

McDonald’s: Veggieburger [link]

McDonald’s: Open 24 hours [link]

McDonald’s: Kick the Trash for Fifa 2010 [link]

This viral campaign encourages youngsters in a playful way to stop littering the area outside McDonald’s restaurants. To accomplish this we let the users slip into the role of tricky street kickers. They can map their own face into the video and kick the trash in the bin to win tickets for the Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

McDonald’s: The Real Milkshake [link]

I looked at the visual… said in my head, “what the hell??”… then read the line and laughed out loud. This is frigging funny and fresh approach. Even though it doesn’t have any typical McDonald’s elements.

McDonald’s: Extra fresh carrots. Only 10kr. [link]

McDonald’s: Spider – Make a deal [link]

When the kid want something rare(like spider), the mom propose go to Mcdonald’s and the kid forget the spider. It is true: Life for parent can be very hard sometimes. Very nice campaign and love the insight.

McDonald’s: Burrito [link]

A strategically placed “egg, sausage and chesse” front page domination combined with a burrito wrapper turns your morning paper into a giant McDonald’s Breakfast Burrito. Awesome use of media!

McDonald’s: New Big Big Mac [link]

McDonald’s: Sundial [link]

This one, will always be GREAT! I really enjoyed. And so smart to think M looks like a fork in this case

McDonald’s: Breakfast [link]

This is cool, even if it will never be on the exact right spot, people will at least try to place it just for the fun of it. Nice idea.

McDonald’s: Metro – Giant Napkin [link]

Economically it’s a great idea. Any time you can get someone to take the ad with them and show it to their friends is great. Yes, this idea cost a little more then a regular poster but it will generate ten times more attention

McCafe: Coffee bean [link]

I would have never known it was a coffee bean without the title, it looked more like an old crusty burger to me. I think this is really smart. Very clever indeed. But the first thing in my head is “Ew! Gross burger!…. oh, coffee. cute.”

McDonald’s newspaper: Fries and Burger [link]

The idea here was to keep McDonald’s front and center, in a multi-tasking world. The articles are real. Just color was added. By fitting into the target’s activity (reading the news), rather than interrupting it, the “on-the-go” brand benefit was demonstrated.

Lamp can not only provides us light, but also some stylizes our home, brings us convenience and create some special atmosphere. In this post, we will showcase 12 Creative and Unusual Lamp/Light Designs, some of them are still concept design, while some of them are already can be purchased on amazon. Personally, I love the mushroom lights most, it just looks so lovely and sweet. How about you?

1. The Great Mushrooming Lights [link]

Yes, your eyes are playing tricks on you. What looks like a mythical treasure one would stumble upon in a storybook tale, is in fact a beautiful eco-friendly combination of reclaimed wood and LED lights. Great Mushrooming is taking inspiration from the world’s best designer, Mother Nature, to create these luminous mushrooms whose only magic lies in their ability to charm.

2. RING-GE-ROO LIGHT by OWA Innovation Design Group [link]

The Ring-ge-roo Light shuttles between innovative, unique and kitsch! It definitely takes the sting out of a hospital drip, which is loathsome yet essential. The water in the PVC bag softens the LED beam of light inside to create a subdued ambient light source. The color of the light can be changed by changing the color of the water inside the bag. I wouldn’t mind hanging this off my arm; just to get some special effects I’d use colored water, as recommended by the designer.

Somehow, this looks a bit creepy for me… maybe just me.

3. Live Lamp [link]

LIVE LAMP is a glowing nest of eighty live Fuschii v Gracillis tillandsia air plants mounted to a blown glass orb. Illuminated internally by a CFL grow lamp, these epiphytic plants survive with no dirt – just UV, air and a little moisture. Remove the dome and run the plants under water or mist liberally once a week.

4. FIAT LUX [link]

FIAT LUX is a lamp whose switch levitates when the light is on. When the light is off, the switch is an autonomous sphere that can be stocked onto the lamp thanks to a magnet system. The user becomes an illusionist by turning the lamp on, just by approaching the switch.

5. A can of Light? [link]

Tin Can; best used for beans, worms, fruits…but apt for light? Yes! If you make it as simplistic as the Tin Can Lights! A sealed surprise just like your can-o-pickles! Peel open the lid to welcome a soft glowing lamp that creates a pleasant ambiance. Strum it as a night lamp or show it off as an eccentric collectible in the living room.

6. Light PEG [link]

The main idea of the lamp is to combine functions of pegs with light, because usually when you buy a lamp it suits one part of your interior, this lamp was created for having light wherever you want to illuminate something. Independent pegs with 6 LED-lams inside each and two rechargeable batteries can be attached to any of the surfaces and can be charged from the wireless charger in a shape of a tree. There are a lot of situations you can use this lamp some of them you can design by yourself.

7. Glowing Pillow – d°light Huggable [link]

The d°light Huggable takes home furnishings to a new level as an innovative combination of ambient lighting and comforting pillow. The soft fuzziness of the wispy, mohair-like cover conceals 12 LEDs that do the glowing. The d°light Huggable can glow brightly for around 4 hours on four AA batteries, after which it dims gradually

8. Shadow Clock Light [link]

This is one is a lamp and only be a clock when it is turned on in dim room.

Designed by Hanhsi Chen and Chiyu Chen, the Shadow Clock concept is some kind of modern sundial. The clock features a conventional halogen bulb and a quartz clock movement mechanism. It is capable of using the shadow created by its built-in halogen lamp to project a giant clock on your wall. From the light comes three different shadows: one each for hour, minute, and second hands of the clock. (I bet I can’t never figure out the time)

9. Moonwalk – Cool Lamp [link]

Moonwalk is the name of this fun and cool lamp made by Thomas De Lussac, a French designer of furniture, light fittings and sofas. The lamp is described as a “playful wink in the universe of the creator”. It’s made of lacquered aluminum and available in several colors and adjustable positions.

10. Oxo Candela Luau [link]

Lizzy, this is the big one. Luau turns bright tabletop lighting into a robust, portable, tactile product that is equally useful indoors and out. The Luau can be lit while on the charger, and lights up automatically when lifted from the base. It can be dimmed or turned off to conserve the charge until you need it. Luau’s discreet charging pod has an integral, bi-color charge status indicator. Great for nighttime strolls, outdoor dining, or even bed-side.

11. Tooli Rechargeable Lights [link]

Kids delight in lights. Candeloos make great bedside sentinels to ward off the dark, or in make-believe adventures and dining room forts. Plus, the SafeCharge system eliminates exposed electrical contacts, making them safe for inquisitive little hands. Candeloo is safe, portable and reusable… but most of all, it’s perfect for brave trips to the bathroom at midnight

12. Good Grips Candela Guardian Light [link]

Power gone, lantern on. The Guardian is two lights in one – the charger has an integral EL panel that’s always lit, and the lantern is portable and illuminates instantly when lifted and during power failures. The Guardian is always ready when you need it; fusebox searches, late-night feedings… and it stands with upright readiness to be at your fingertips.
